Honors Program

The Human Development Program offers an honors option for those students who have demonstrated excellence in the human development major. Human Development Honors allows eligible undergraduates to explore advanced issues in the field through an honors thesis, on a topic of their choice, and under faculty supervision. Upon completion of all honors requirements, successful students will graduate with Human Development Honors.

Students interested in the HDP Honors Program must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Junior standing at the time of application (90 units completed by the end of Spring quarter prior to beginning honors.) 2. A minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.2, and a 3.5 G.P.A. for all courses taken in the human development major (both lower and upper-division courses). 3. Completion of HDP 191, a lab course, and the lower-division statistics requirement by Spring quarter prior to beginning the Honors program in the Fall.

It is highly recommended that students interested in the Honors program complete at least one 199 course in order to get more exposure to the research environment, and to make connections with possible faculty advisors. (Students who do not meet these minimum requirements should consult with the Student Affairs Coordinator about the possibility of waiving certain requirements)

The Application Process

Applications for the HDP Honors program can be picked up at the HDP office at 2839 AP&M Annex along with the Honors preparation packet. Interested students who believe they meet eligibility requirements, or will meet them by the end of Spring quarter, should make an appointment with the Student Affairs Coordinator for more information. Eligibility status will be determined at the end of Spring quarter and qualified students will be notified in early Summer. To be considered for the Honors program, qualified students must submit their application and a proposal by the end of Spring quarter. The proposal is a decription and justification of the research project. The thesis proposal should include the following:

• an introduction of the research topic with a proposed research question;
• an explaination of the significance of the project;
• a brief survey of current literature on the topic;
• a tentative outline of the plan of action, including strategies and procedures that might be used;
• a preliminary 5 item bibliography.

Successful completion of the HDP Honors Program requires:

1. Maintenance of a 3.5 GPA in all major course work, and a 3.2 GPA overall until graduation.
2. Completion of one upper-division course in statistics, experimental design, laboratory analysis or methods. (See the Student Affairs Coordinator for a list of approved courses).
3. Completion of HDP 194 A, B, and C with a grade of A- or higher, resulting in an honors thesis at the end of Spring quarter. (Any project involving human subjects must have approval from the Committee on Investigations Involving Human Subjects)
4. Attend weekly Center for Human Development Seminar Series lecture.
5. An oral presentation of the final thesis with HDP Executive Faculty or at the UCSD Undergraduate Research Conference (honors students must be nominated by their faculty advisor to participate in this conference.)
6. Approval of final thesis by HDP Executive Faculty and thesis advisor.
