Minor in Human Developmental Sciences

A total of 7 courses (1 lower-division, 6 upper-division) are required to complete a minor in Human Developmental Sciences.

How to Declare the Minor

All students who plan to minor in Human Developmental Sciences are encouraged to meet with an HDS Advisor for assistance with curriculum planning. Please contact (858) 534-9919 in order to schedule an appointment.

You can declare the Human Developmental Sciences minor via TritonLink. Students will need to list the classes that they have taken and/or plan to take for the minor. Please note that only 2 upper-division courses can overlap between the Human Developmental Sciences minor and your major. The remaining four non-overlapping courses should be from a different discipline than your major. Students will need to specify which 2 classes they would like to overlap in the minor application. Courses will not overlap automatically. 

Requirements for a Minor in Human Development Sciences

  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade; pass/no pass grades are not accepted.
  • All upper-division coursework must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
  • As of Fall 2016: Two upper-division courses may overlap between a student's major and the HDS minor. The remaining four upper divsion courses for the HDS minor should not be from the student's major department. Students may not overlap upper-division minor courses with general education requirements (except the DEI requirement).
  • Core coursework (HDP 110, 111, 120, 121, 122, 133) can be petitioned for HDS minor credit (subject to approval).

 

Lower-Division Course

1 lower-division course is required to complete a minor in Human Developmental Sciences.

Lower-Division Course (1 Course)

HDP 1 - Introduction to Human Development 

(Must be taken in residence and offered only once per year, in fall).

Upper-Division Requirements

A total of 6 upper-division courses must be taken. At least 1 course must be completed from each area of focus: Biological, Ontogenetic, and Socio-Cultural. The remaining courses may be selected by the student according to academic and professional interests.

Biological Development

At least 1 course selected from the following approved list:
  • ANBI 116 - Evolution of Primate Reproduction 
    Prerequisite: ANTH 2 and upper division standing.
  • ANBI 140 - The Evolution of the Human Brain
  • ANBI 159 - Biological and Cultural Perspectives on Intelligence 
    Prerequisites: Upper-division standing, any one of the following: ANTH 2, or ANTH 42, or BILD 3 or consent of instructor.
  • ANBI 173 - Cognition in Animals and Humans 
    Prerequisites: Upper-division standing, ANTH 2 or equivalent.
  • ANTH 102 - Humans are Cultural Animals 
    Prerequisites: Upper-division standing, ANTH 2 or equivalent.
  • BICD 100 - Genetics 
    Prerequisites: BILD 1 or equivalent. (Prerequisites for BILD 1: CHEM 6A & CHEM 6B; CHEM 6B may be taken concurrently.)
  • BICD 112 - Stem Cells and Regeneration
    Prerequisites: BIMM 100.
  • BICD 130 - Embryos, Genes, and Development
    Prerequisites: BICD 100, BIBC 100 or BIBC 102. BICD 110 or BIMM 100 strongly recommended.
  • BIPN 134 - Human Reproduction
    Prerequisites: BIBC 102 and BICD 100.
  • BIPN 144 - Developmental Neurobiology 
    Prerequisites: Upper division standing. Students should have a strong background in biology.
  • BIPN 148 - Cellular Basis of Learning and Memory 
    Prerequisites: BIPN 100.
  • COGS 115 - Neurological Development and Cognitive Change 
    Prerequisites: BILD 10 (or equivalent), COGS 17 or HDP 110.
  • COGS 184 - Modeling the Evolution of Cognition 
    Prerequisites: Programming ability, calculus, and consent of instructor.
  • HDP 110 - Brain and Behavioral Development
    Prerequisite: HDP 1 or PSYC 101.
  • HDP 111 - Evolutionary Principles of Development
    Prerequisite: HDP 1 or ANTH 2 or BILD 3.
  • PSYC 132 - Hormones and Behavior
    Prerequisites: Upper Division standing.
  • PSYC 168 - Psychological Disorders of Childhood 
    Prerequisite: Upper-division standing.
  • PSYC 171 - Neurobiology of Learning and Memory
    Prerequisite: PSYC 2 or 106 or 181, upper-division standing.
